About Me

Hi, I’m Kaitlynn! I’m currently a senior nursing student at the University of Connecticut, (UConn). As a first-generation college student from a Latina background, I’ve lived in Southeastern Connecticut my whole life which has been inspiring my passion for giving back to the community that has shaped me over the years.

My nursing journey has consisted of working in the emergency room and other nursing specialities during my clinical rotations, where I’ve gained hands-on experience caring for patients during some of their most challenging moments. I've had the privilege of working with and learning from many different individuals during their care.  My interest in mental health has been strengthened by my own life and these experiences where I have realized it is in every aspect of a person's life, influencing their physical health, relationships, decision-making, and overall well-being. I’ve seen firsthand how mental health plays a role in patient care, no matter the setting. I have also realized that a person's identity factors is reflected in their day to day experiences. Nursing’s focus on holistic care—treating the whole person—is what drew me to the nursing field and inspires me to help people in a way that truly makes a difference.

Racialized minority communities have benefited from an improved social justice and self-determination approach implemented by professionals. This has been done by using positive behavior support at the inpatient level and increasing medical knowledge of mental health care delivery at the community level (Carr & Ponce, 2022).
